Seriously, it's a good question you raise. It may have something to do with how those of us who remember the "cheesy crapfests" of the 80s were young and easily pleased. We're older and, I guess, have developed some taste or at least been exposed to more varieties of quality (or the lack thereof) in cinema. I'm talking without coffee in myself yet though, so I may be off-base here.
