American Gangster aside (and that's probably because I like Denzel and what he can bring to the table, and they made a good pair-up)...
But is it just me or does Russell Crowe just, well, suck? I mean, almost all his movies.

I don't think so. Like him or not, he's been good in a lot of movies - Master and Commander, The Insider, The Quick and the Dead, Gladiator, to name a
few... what is it that makes you think he's a bad actor?

Yeah, I like him a lot, actually. I thought he was great in the 3:10 to Yuma remake.

Yeah, he was damn good in 3:10...

Beautiful Mind - well, Ron Howard was the achieving factor there, was he not? I don't know: Cinderella Man, Body of Lies, and now State of Play. I mean, I know he's known for choosing his roles very carefully, but sometimes I just don't like his acting within the roles.

His "early years" , Aussie movies, have a little less -gravitas.If that's what you don't like. Try "THE SUM OF US"-for
example.He's actually playing a gay man in it,and he's very affecting.There'a another one I can't remember the title,something about a blind
photographer? He's not palying that role though ,but the photog's friend.Very twisty drama !I think you'll see his talent at an early stage.

I don't know: Cinderella Man, Body of Lies, and now State of Play. I haven't seen the last two, but I thought Crowe's performance in Cinderella Man was massively impressive, even if the script did deviate from the truth and unjustifiably blacken the reputation of one boxer unnecessarily, but that had nothing to do with Crowe. That's a direcror's and script writer's disregard for the truth. I've yet to see him act badly in anything I've seen. A big fan of the Patrick O'Brien novels I was sceptical about his ability to play Captain Aubrey in Master and Commander - and was amazed how well he did it, turning out an incredible performance. So, yes, it's most definitely you, Lawrence. David |

I think it's personal preference, Lawrence. I wonder if Crowe isn't a jerk in real life, but his performances in L.A. Confidential, Master and
Commander, and Cinderella Man were terrific.

Crowe is indeed a very good actor. I first saw him as Hando the fascist skinhead in the excellent Romper Stomper, and thought he was sublime as Bud White in
L.A. Confidential. Since then he's never been less than outstanding, IMHO.

I have been a big fan of Crowe ever since I saw Gladiator. That was an amazingly intense and moving film.

Gary Mc wrote:Crowe easily equalled Edward Norton when it comes to playing a Neo-Nazi skinhead; both Romper Stomper and American History X are fantastic slices of cinema verite that perfectly illustrates how evil Nazism. Hard to believe that Romper Stomper was derided in many sections of the British press has racist trash, with the Jewish Council calling on the BBFC to ban it. Didn't they see the ending? LA Confidential also displayed how good Guy Pearce was - a film where it took two Australian actors to portray perfectly a 1940s cop. Of course, fans of Leonard's novel didn't much like it. Personally, I'm looking forward to State of Play next week: I loved the original BBC mini-series - a tale of genuine surprise, where a simple outline escalated into a full-blown Government conspiracy. John Simm and Bill Nighy were superb. |

Hate to be picky, but L.A. confidential was written by James Ellroy, and is part of his L.A. quartet series. Also, it's set in the early 1950s
(one can see the marquis for When worlds collide in the background of the Christmas pot bust scene). Until his last novel I considered myself to be an
Ellroy junkie and thought that L.A. confidential was an excellent adaptation of the book, even though the majority of the interwoven sub-plots had to
be discarded.
Also, to get back on topic: I still think that Bud was Crowe's best role of his flicks that I've seen. Saturnally, Moudry |
