Oliver Onions |

Oliver Onions was a master of the supernatural tale. His ghost stories were elegantly written and well plotted, and his characters were fully fleshed. He is
known for psychological insight into his characters, and a common theme is a character's realization that ghosts are not confined to traditional haunted
old places but exist in the contemporary world. His theory of ghosts, at least in his fiction, was that they are all around us but are usually not visible.
Only when there is a slight shift in the equilibrium between the supernatural and the natural worlds are ghosts sometimes sighted. Though Onions wrote
convincingly about the supernatural, he did not believe in ghosts.

I believe Wordsworth Editions is finalising details and hope to be publishing a collection of Oliver Onions work, probably next year (including an unpublished
story). For those who are not aware Wordsworth have an excellent "Tales of Mystery and the Supernatural" series and best of all the books are cheap

Oliver Onions is one of the best, no question. I have the lovely Tartarus edition of his Collected Ghost Stories.
By the way, I've read that his last name was pronounced "Oh-NY-ons," with the stress on the middle syllable, which rhymes with "high." But I suppose if your last name is spelled "Onions" you can't be too picky.... |

His novel 'The Story of Ragged Robyn' is also well worth reading.

Oliver Onions is a supremely wonderful writer. If it comes off, the Wordsworth Collected Onions should be a reprint of the Tartarus edition which is now out of
print.
According to the family his name was pronounced "Onions" as in the vegetable, or the England cricketer. All best wishes, Ray |

That's great news, Highlander and Ray. I'd love to read that collection, and perhaps pick up some other Wordsworth collections as well. There seem to
be quite a few listed at amazon.co.uk.
Edited to add: I see they're also available at Amazon.com.
