People in UK need to go to a Swiss Clinic in order to end their life in an assisted way. Even so, it is still legally dubious if anyone who travels wih you is
then liable for offences when returning to the UK.

I wonder if it is relevant, in this context, that Switzerland has been neutral in various wars?

It might not make me popular, but I genuinely believe that if, *medically, you are beyond all possible hope and in pain and suffering for your dignity, that,
yes, that option should be open to you, and that doctors (who are trained and qualified) should help their patients to move on as painlessly as possible.
I can't imagine the horror of being forced to stay alive through medication/machines while in pain. *as opposed to mental problems associated with suicide, of course. I'm sure, though, someone would abuse the system. |

I don't think Switzerland's neutrality is very relevant to this, Des.
I'm with Karen: I find the fact that the government think this is any of their business completely repulsive. |

I think Switzerland is just very liberal.

Nemonymous wrote: Fair enough. I just can't see the connection myself. (Now the fact that Switzerland is -besides those daft montblanc pens and the cuckooo clock- best known for banking seems a lot more germane to wartime neutrality.) Actually, on that level what's the national religion in Switzerland? Presumably it's not a Catholic country like Germany or France (where otherwise they would be doing assisted suicides, one hopes.) |

Anyone who is in great physical pain with no hope of effective treatment should be allowed to end their lives with the aid of a wiling physician.
In every political community there are varying shades of political opinion. One of the shadiest of these is
the liberals. An outspoken group on many subjects. Ten degrees to the left of center in good times. Ten degrees to the right of center if it affects them
personally.--Phil Ochs

No wonder the Swiss remain neutral - their army must be rubbish. Have you seen the size of their knives?
Useless at killing the enemy, but they can get stones out of a horse's shoe. |

Beyond the question of dignity and ending one's suffering, there is also the matter of crushing debt acquired by prolonging a hopeless situation. I would
never leave my wife ruined in the face of my certain demise.

It was quite usefully for cavalry troops when they invented the thing.

I know. I'm just being flippant.
Suicide is a weird thing. I think assisted death probably goes on a lot more than many of us realise. I say this with the experience of seeing my dad - who died last year - spend most of his life in and out of hospital at various stages. |

One of my worst fears is being incapacitated and ready to die, but being unable to take that step because of paralysis or somesuch.

Phil and I have living wills and the agreement that when it's over, it's over. We refuse to line the pockets of the greedy corporations that have taken
over healthcare in this country. There is no way in hell, that if I or Phil is terminal, that we will lose what we worked for all of our lives.
