I'd like to answer this in terms of the actual wording in the post itself--asking for (personal) favorites outside the genre--rather than the more difficult and objective task implied in the topic "top 4 authors outside of horror."

That said, I'm having a hard time. The first four who came to mind have written some horror fiction, even if they're not always associated with the genre in the main:

1. Cornell Woolrich
   
2. M. John Harrison
3. Gene Wolfe
4. Iain M. Banks

(Sorry, I love those authors too much not to mention them!)

My actual list outside the genre would be:

1. Greil Marcus (Is non-fiction okay? Even if he does have an odd short story called "I am a Cliche"...)
   
2. Graham Greene (Okay, he did write a few horrific short stories and some fantasy work...)
3. John Le Carre
4. Walter Benjamin (Highly readable cultural critic whose essays often read like prose poetry.)
