What if....? |

I was thinking about what Stephen King says in On Writing about how most of his story ideas can be boiled down into
simple 'What If' questions.

Freaky. I was flicking through the Sky channels not an hour ago and came across an episode of Friday the 13th on Zone Horror that used that exact same premise.

Was that the episode where the ink had some tainted blood in it or something... I think I can remember it.... it had something to do with the source of the
ink....

Not sure. I caught it about 10 minutes from the end, read the information, and then flicked on, in the hope that they'll repeat it sometime soon (Sonya was
in the room, and I'd already subjected her to ten minutes of THE CRAWLING HAND on one of the public access channels and didn't want to push my luck).

My stories start either with "What if..." or images. Sometimes it's "what if a crashed submarine was being stalked by a sea monster,"
or "what if a news photographer started seeing ghosts through her camera?" Or it's an image, often from dreams, like a woman climbing a rope
ladder against the background of a burning city, or a man watching his fiance's blood seep between cobblestones by the river. You know, light fun stuff
like that.
But yeah, I think most stories start in one place or the other.

What if everybody in the world found a corpse in the trunk of their car the next time they opened it?

What if the biological mechanism that causes vampirism only worked properly on women? is one I published the other year, though said "what if" is
very well hidden in the text and doesn't emerge until the end.
What if a drum and bass record sampled noises from a black ops research project that can kill people is one I pinched from an old Kate Bush single. (It's not plagiarism, it's a tribute.) |

What if everybody in the world found a corpse in the trunk of their car the next time they opened it?You'd have a tough time selling that one, Stephen. Editors usually frown on trunk stories. |

Kealan, funny you should post. I think one of the best What Ifs is your story Peekers.
