Holy cow, what a general question.
I'm assuming that by "foreign" you mean films from non-English speaking countries...Otherwise I'll end up listing Brief Encounter, The Browning Version, Room With a View, A Hard Day's Night, and about a thousand other British films. Off the top of my head... The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari Metropolis Tokyo Story Ringu Ringu 0 Dark Water A Tale of Two Sisters Seven Beauties Diabolique Bye Bye Brazil That leaves off about another 20 that come quickly to mind. |

Some great films have been listed in this thread. It'd make a pretty good guide (at least a starter's guide) to which foreign language films are worth
checking out, especially if you're looking for ones with a leaning toward fantasy or horror.
I'd like to add a few more from Japan: Yojimbo Sanjuro Onibaba The Hidden Fortress Woman in the Dunes Kwaidan Kuroneko The Sword of Doom The Human Condition Musashi Miyamoto (a trilogy chronicling the life and adventures of the famed swordsman) Hanabi Sonatine (just about anything by 'Beat' Takeshi is worth seeking out) I agree with the poster who listed Twilight Samurai, as well -- superb film with a subtle, heartfelt, and absolutely brilliant performance by Sanada Hiroyuki (aka 'Duke' Sanada, Henry Sanada, etc.). This guy's been in a ton of films before he started appearing in Western films like The Last Samurai and Sunshine -- loads of Sonny Chiba films, as well as samurai and yakuza flicks. |

Night Of The Hunter
Bring Me The Head Of Alfredo Garcia The Searchers The Wild Bunch The Haunting The Thing (1982) She Wore A Yellow Ribbon Dawn Of The Dead The Sweet Smell Of Success Johnny Guitar Last time I checked, I wasn't American, so all of this Hollywood stuff is foreign films. (The Americans on the forum could name a shitload of Hammer and Amicus stuff, by the same logic. Maybe they should.) |
