Okay, I'll stop trolling for a second and explain.
Too many fairies? Is this the same Poppy Z Brite we're thinking of here? Tanith Lee you can make a case for with that one, I suppose |

How about Karen Joy Fowler? Some of her short stories are pretty thoroughly nasty.

And I huge thanks to everyone for not completely derailing the thread. John, I'll search for the past thread, cause, you're right: it would save me
some time. But I appreciate the responses here, so please, keep them coming.

Some call it derailing, I call it conversation. I always wonder, do people do this with their friends and family the way they do on message boards: like stand
up and shout "EVERYBODY! BACK TO THE ORIGINAL TOPIC OR I WILL END THIS FOOLISHNESS! WE WERE TALKING ABOUT CATS TWENTY MINUTES AGO, NOT THE MATRIX!"

Hey, calm down there, friend. I was simply thanking everyone for their great responses and thanking them for not turning this into a locked thread.

It's not like I'm attacking you or mods in general - people participating in threads do it all the time, too, all over the place. It always reminds me of Kevin Bacon yelling "ALL IS WELL! REMAIN CALM!" at the end of Animal House, kinda. |

We're supposed to write about faeries? Oops. I've been writing about zombies. My bad. Those two are so easy to confuse.

Many great names have been mentioned already . . .
I'll add Elizabeth Massie as a writer. Ellen Datlow is one of my all-time favorite editors bar none. |
|||
Norman Partridge |

A lot of great writers mentioned here. I'll add another: Tia V. Travis. Check out "The Kiss" in Peter Straub's POE'S CHILDREN; or
"One Thousand Dragon Sheets" in the new Ash-Tree antho, EXOTIC GOTHIC 2 edited by Danel Olson; or click on over to SUBTERRANEAN ONLINE and read
"No Need of
Wings".
Of course, I'm prejudiced. Tia's my wife. Norm |

Women in Horror in the NY Times
Caitlín R. Kiernan is amazing -- especially her short fiction. Kathe Koja, who is finally returning to adult fiction with Under The Poppy, is our David Cronenberg. Absolutely revolutionary and as good as any contemporary writer that has passed through our beloved genre. A.R. Morlan wrote varied short fiction of excellent quality. And then there were her novels. Dark Journey is a masterpiece and Morlan is the most overlooked horror writer to emerge from the early nineties. Gemma Files, at her best, is as good as anyone. Kelly Link only occasionally visits Horror, but what occasions they are. I think of her as Fantasy's Martha Soukup. And then there is Elizabeth Hand, Lisa Tuttle, Elizabeth Massie, et al. And then there are the brilliant one-offs: Anne Rivers Siddon -- The House Next Door Erika Mailman -- The Witch's Trinity Lynn Biederstadt -- Sleep: A Horror Story Sheila Kohler -- The Perfect Place Cecile Pineda -- Face Even more than their male counterparts, the best female authors of Horror have a rather low profile -- but if you seek them out, you will amply rewarded for the effort.

Your having only heard of three of the authors that I mentioned does seem to confirm their low profile; or that you have no qualms about spewing unqualified bilge. Of what consequence is their enjoying or not enjoying their low profile? Uh...maybe they are better known in foreign parts. And it's of every consequence whether they enjoy a low profile. If they do, then fine. If they don't- then they can change that, can't they? Really, ~I think it's quite obvious. Your insults would be better felt if you showed you had made some small effort to understand, instead of making the usual boring wisecracks that your kind seems prone to. |
