I had mixed feelings. I gave it a B-. I thought it was amazingly acted, but too long and slow for me -- especially the first half, which really really dragged
for me. Ultimately I'm glad i saw it, but it was a bit of a mixed bag for me.

yes, the pacing might not have been ideal, I'll give you that - but again, I'd say the comparison with most hollywood crap was still telling in its
favor. To front load the slow development of the romance I thought was actually kind of daring, and the tenderness of the scenes (not much skin or thrusting in
the sex scene, and lots of talking) was refreshing. I really don't get worked up about a movie more than once a year, and this would be my choice thus far
for 09.

I thought the scenes between Depp and Cotillard -- actually any scene with Cotillard -- gave the movie its power. She was amazing.

I really liked the movie. I thought the pacing was really good and it let the characters develope. At times though, I felt that Depp and Bale were just going
through the motions.

I thought it was terribly boring. Just completely flat. I didn't care about a single character because there was zero character development. Supporting
characters were just...there. They added nothing but confusion because you had to think too much to figure out who they were. Depp and Bale mailed it in. The
shootouts were short and pointless, and when there was a good one (the cabin shootout), it was ruined because you couldn't see a damn thing. And the
romance...booooring.
It would have been better if they chopped an hour off of its two and half hour length. |

Entertaining in that glossy, self-important, big Hollywood production way. Less irritating and stupid than most. I'd go with a B.
And then there's Billy Crudup as Hoover - a near-genius performance. He made my skin crawl almost as much as the real Hoover. |

Looking forward to this one.
And Ken, I'm surprised about you thinking Depp mailed it in, simply because I don't think I've ever seen a movie where his acting wasn't superb. |

Craig Cook wrote:It wasn't that his acting was bad, it was just rather boring and lifeless. Maybe that was the point, however, and it just sailed over my head, but I saw it with two other people and both were just as underwhelmed. Seems to be a love/hate kind of flick, in terms of opinion. |

Shocklines wrote:I saw Public Enemies yesterday and for me Matt summed it up perfectly. It was long and it failed my good movie test. When I see a movie if I'm glancing at my watch trying to see how much time is remaining before the movie is over and I can get up and leave the movie obviously isn't holding my attention. This is what I was doing yesterday at the movie theater. That said, I don't think Public Enemies was a bad movie. Cap

I finally saw it last night; I agree it dragged in some places, but I still enjoyed it.

Great movie. Crudup was great as Hoover, too! I'd give it a B-
I can't wait to see Depp in Alice in Wonderland as The Mad Hatter.

"Great movie" = "B-"?
Just wondering. Haven't seen the movie; will have to wait for Netflix. T.M. |
