AND, I wanted to see who REALLY reads my posts -- besides Hank, of course. So, I wanted to comment on something COMPLETELY off topic but which, in my opinion, is indicative of the sorry state of our nation today and the world in general -- not to mention a sad example of our flagging economy. I passed a store this morning as saw this sign in the window: All Betty Boop Merchandise 40% Off. Yes, it's true. An iconic figure has been <gulp> remaindered! This is indeed a day of sorrw for all. It's insulting, is what it is, disrespectful. It's rather like someone had translated out national heritage into Cyberspeak. Can you imagine what our country would be like had we been founded upon a document which begins: "We the peeps of the United States of America?" I am emotionally distraught. I shall immediately don an outfit of deepest black, garnish my bedchamber with lillies and retire for several months to recuperate. -Hal

I have a Betty Boop ceramic thingy that I use for holding paper clips on my desk given to me by Jennifer Lien about ten years ago. I cherish it almost as much as the piece of coal I got from the Titanic when I made a donation to Ballard's (successful) expedition. (If you gave 'em enough money, they promised to send you something from the ship if they ever found it -- or something like that. Well, they did find it and I proudly display my lump of coal!) Or my parrot umbrella from Mary Poppins -- actually TOUCHED by Julie Andrews BEFORE she showed her boobies on screen! First the Warner Brothers Studio stores closed, then the Disney stores, now this! I tell you people, American icons are under attack!!! What's next? Closing of Starbucks ? (Oh, yeah. Right. That's already happening.) Well then, maybe we should just expect 7-11s to be staffed by people who speak English! I'm telling you it's a slippery slope. 7-11swith English-speaking clerks is just...well...it's just un-American! What, oh what, is this country coming to?
