"And this has to do with the economy, the war, environment, gas prices, how?

Meh. Nevermind, then. The first amendment wasn't created to defend polite speech. |

Ooh, this is so not good! He lets his Kenyan half-brother subsist on a buck a month? Is he that cheap? There is no way that this can turn out well for the Barrymeister, and he's already down in the polls. |

Oh, my. Here we go. Are we supposed to respond with McCain's cheating on his crippled first wife? The half-sister cut off from Mrs. McCain's beer
fortune? As if any of this utter bullshit had something to do with the state of our economy, the two wars we're fighting, the record deficit, the falling
dollar, the collapsing infrastructure, the out of control corruption, social security, welfare reform, the housing market, the banking crisis....my fingers are
getting tired.
Maybe we deserve what we get after all. |

Leftists who say "we" in these conversations always mean "you". |

What you call "utter bullshit" when it comes to the personal lives of politicians, does matter. I believe in holding our representatives to a higher
standard.

HarryShannon wrote:I see your point, Harry, but it's still pretty bad news if he didn't do anything about his half-brother living in a $12/year mud hut, especially since he presents himself as a community organizer whose cherished goals include lifting black people out of poverty. This is his own family living in a Sally Struthers commercial. Couldn't he at least have slipped him (literally) a couple bucks so his "long lost" brother could move into a better, more spacious mud hut? It's not like it would have cable. |

trenttaylor wrote:Then what do you have to say about McCain and his infidelity and leaving his first wife after her accident to marry his current wife? Just curious you know. Of how about McCain's vote on the Military Commissions Act that defined many of the things he went through in Vietnam as not being torture? Curious really. Since, you know, he says he was tortured but now doens't think those that are going through the same interrogation techniques as being tortured. |

Politics is a serious business that focuses on trivial, often absurd, issues. Today, the Obama camp is making a big deal over McCain owning "seven
houses" (a number of which are apparently condos). A guy whose household income is between four and five million a year accusing a guy whose household
income is between six and seven million a year of being rich and elitist in response to charges by the other side that he's rich and elitist illustrates
how silly the whole thing can be.
But I do agree with Bile that there is something unsettling about a half-brother living in that kind of abject penury, when for the price of some arugula Obama could drastically change his life. Not highly relevant to the campaign, but a bit off-putting. Not everything unpleasant McCain endured in 'Nam was torture, and he understands that. But he was tortured way, way, way beyond the current anything-rough-is-torture histrionics we've been hearing. He had severe injuries, including bone fractures and bayonet wounds, at the time he was captured, and the Vietnamese refused to treat them, instead beating him violently even in that severely injured state while they interrogated him. That's not waterboarding, or saying mean things, or playing loud music. He lost fifty pounds, had a crushed ribcage and barely survived. He still can't raise his arms above his head. The U.S., on the other hand, has waterboarded a grand total of three people, all top al Qaeda operatives who were refusing to divulge information about terror cells and plots, and each with a doctor present, after layers of bureacratic approval were secured. People can disagree over whether waterboarding is torture, it may very well be, but it's not the same thing as what McCain went through. No journalist would ever consent to what McCain went through just to write an opinion piece about the experience. |

So presumably it'd be completely out of order for people to wander around the Democratic convention with plasters with little purple heart emblems on them
stuck on their faces bragging about how they've got a medal for cutting themselves shaving or something, then? It's strange how the Republicans have
taken a sudden u turn (one might almost say that they've flip flopped) about the inherent nobility of military service and men who've been injured in
their country's service now that they've nominated somebody who served in Vietnam, rather than going awol from the national guard.

trenttaylor wrote: Has anyone confirmed, in fact, that this is true? Kind of reminds me of the most racist, hate filled email I received the other day blaming everything from RFK's assasination, Munich Olympics Massacre ando the Achille Lauro incident on "muslim males between the ages of 17 and 40" and then goes on to accuse Obama of being a muslim male between the ages of 17-40. Funny that, facts and all don't seem to matter as Obama is *not* a muslim (remember all the issues with his church pastor? I though Muslims had Immans) and the fact that he's 47. Oh, that and they tried to allude to the fact that he's the "anti-christ". Made me physically ill to see that kind of hate coming from someone I once considered a friend. |
