What makes a conspiracy? |

Okay, 9/11 aside... Seriously, what do you think counts as or makes a REAL conspiracy?

Two or more folks breathing together, if I have the etymology correct.
So a room full of yoga practitioners following the breath in unison is one of the greatest forms of conspiracy ever devised. Fun too! And of course there are even funner breathings-together, if you catch my drift. :^)

For me I smell conspiracy when really crap songs win the Euro-vision Song Contest! Or perhaps that's more political...

I'm involved in one, but what keeps it a conspiracy is that I'm not leaking details.
But I will say that we are dangerous. Very dangerous. And slightly silly but much more dangerous than silly. Much more dangerous. More dangerous than evil radioactive bees. And there will come a time when you will all understand, and those who made us suffer will rue the day. RUE. THE. DAY!

I would have thought the answer was obvious? There is a small cabal of influential but faceless people who create the conspiracy theories for us. They work out
of a small, undistinguished office on the Cowley Road in Oxford and they create the conspiracies and drop them into an internet forum here, a WI meeting there,
and nobody ever tracks them back to the source.
However, they have made a blunder and let the cat out of the bag. To get funding for their work they started publishing the theories on bubble gum cards for collectors, and even issued an album to stick them in. I collect these theories, and nearly have a complete set, but I still haven't found number 35 (the one that explains that Princess Diana never existed but was played by a series of different actresses.) I have lots of duplicates of 9/11 (card number 3). If anyone wants one of my spare number 3 cards for the elusive card 35 please contact me. (I suspect that they never actually printed up card 35.) |

But do you have the ever elusive number 42?

Yes, but 42 is an odd card, isn't it? It gives the answer, of course, but what was the question?

(I suspect that they never actually printed up card 35.)It's a conspiracy! I finally managed to get hold of card number 33, the one that proves that Lord Lucan, Jimmy Hoffa, and Judge Crater were actually the same person. |

Purple, if a really crap song doesn't win Eurovision, that's more likely to be the result of a conspiracy.

I was going to suggest that there was a card in the conspiracy set which explained why my questions to Mike Philbin in the "Fabled Enemies" thread
had been removed, but I see some others have disappeared too and the thread has been locked. I think I know what Matt was objecting to (surely not my
reasonable questions), and I was collateral damage. Oh well.

I don't actually believe ANY conspiracy theories, but I love hearing about them.
I think to create a conspiracy theory you need a base of truth where there is room to blur the edges. Add a smattering of lies, and leaps of faith, and there you go - the rest is filled in by enthusiastic believers who interpret evidence to suit their own purposes. |

I'd question that there's a base of truth to (say) the ZOG theory or David Icke's notion about alien lizards, Stephen.

I've never been on a board where it work this way. EDIT: Not that I'm trying to be a bitch or anything, as I like Matt. It just seems to me that if someone makes an ass of himself the mod ought to leave it there for prosperity, instead of censoring the board. If posts are edited, or if someone gets a ban warning, it's always been accompanied by a public announcement everywhere else I've been.

Dominic, I understand what you're saying, but I'm not sure there's any base of truth in the David Icke ravings.
And the ZOG theory is just religious fundamentalism. |

Are people who generally believe in conspiracy theories more paranoid than the rest of us?
Or is it just me? |

No, I suspect that Paranoia is a vital asset for a conspiracy theorist (just look at that berk Fred Cowan, for instance).
I think the person who suggested elsewhere on the board that conspiracy theories function more as compensatory fantasies for inadequetes than anything else is onto something as well. |

Oh, definitely. I think the Presleyburger is my favourite conspiracy theory.

I've often found there's more curiosity and wannabe detective work involved in the "conspiracy theorist" rather than paranoia; after all, these theorists are kind of like David Duchovny in the X-Files, trying to debunk every single nook and cranny to get to the bottom of the truth... even if it's staring them right in the face. The non-conspiracy theorist (and I mean to the fullest), however... well, their paranoia will show usually in their constant denial and rage over a subject which is, at the very least, open to stimulating debate from two sides rather than argumentative fodder. My two cents.
