I have received some great and very positive feedback for The Vampire Manifesto - thank you. After an initial 100 hits on the download site, there is upward
of 20 hits a week and still going strong... wooow you say!
However, it seems a few people are a bit uncomfortable downloading from Lulu and the pdf has been criticised. Fair points. As I see it, The manifesto
is a free download and the work therein is first class - why moan about an extra space between words and why should I spend extra hours preparing when you can
post it easily at Lulu? I have been published many times and sometimes even the best of editors err... don't they? Ahem...
Someone at Tomoview severely criticised everything about the manifesto. That's okay, art puts itself forward for such views. It made me smile when one
person posted this: "I love you guys (tomokato) for reading this shit (the manifesto) so we don't have to..." I like that! It would be good if
tomokato had read the entire work and not just the first story to save everyone from reading all of the way through it... this is all tongue in cheek by the
way!
To be serious I think elitism has raised its ugly head here... but that's good. The Manifesto is political... in a literary sense and not spelt with a
capital P.
I would like some more submissions please... submissions

A.D., I wouldn't worry about getting Tomoviewed. I've been tomoviewed, too.
My advice: there will always be critics with insubstantial views, so just make sure you love what you do, and go and make this magazine a success. The Best advice is the kind where the reviewer tells you how you can IMPROVE on it, and perhaps provides a link to show you the way. Edited for more sincerity.

I'm still trying to figure out why writers, when they receive less than favorable remarks, can't suck it up like every other normal, professional writer and accept that their work may have flaws. It's lovely when the rebuttal is "It's usually just a bunch of rural, snarky people on checks for low self-esteem and other depressive disorders giving opinions that really don't have any substance to begin with," because really, what do your creds have to be before your thoughts and opinions are accepted? It's really just too bad if authors dismiss critiques and think the world is out to get them, if their work is perceived as less than brilliant. It's rather disappointing, actually. If you can't take criticism, my fellow writers, you really shouldn't let other people read it. Monica

No one said anything about not accepting criticism... but criticism CAN come under many guises and not all to do with the work being criticised. I found tomo
funny but not at all helpfull or to facilitate a way to improve the manifesto. To me it just sounded like someone picking out anything and having a go...
albeit it in a whimsical and amusing way.

googling myself (very sad) and never recieved an invitation to discuss the work on the forum. I will only reply to manifesto related issues and not trade

Tomo has been doing these reviews for many years now. The purpose is similar to that of political cartoonists who poke fun at the gaffs of politicians. The
purpose is not to offer literary critiques per se, but to poke fun at literary and genre gaffs. This does not mean they should be ignored. Tomo and the
people who post comments there have a valid opinion and a gift for seeing the flaws in things (again, like those cartoonists). Snarky reviews and reviewers
are becoming the norm, and the fact is that they are far gentler than the reviewers of the 1920s, such as Dorothy Parker and the membership of the Algonquin
Round Table. I'm sure you are familiar with the phrase, "Constant rweader fwoed up." That was Parker.
If you can't learn to laugh at yourself and take reviews in the spirit that they are given you have problems and it will only get worse. I have gotten my share of snarky reviews. Some of them are my favorites, mostly because I long ago learned to laugh at myself and not take matters seriously. And, if I have the option, I go back and fix those flaws in later editions. |

book. And everyone does have a right to their opinions.
But not everyone has the ability to write. And there is the difference. Ability. You may think you have the ability but the facts may tell otherwise. Hell, I can't do maths, even with years of practice, so why call myself a mathematician? I cannot so I won't Not everyone who puts pen to paper can write. "Elitism" as you call it, ensures professional quality. |

Hmm. Interesting, if a little introspective and navel-gazing.
The question still remains: if non-fee charging writers are going to take over, who will have the experience and grammatical strength to be sure editorial standards remain high? This Lance says that paid writers are afraid of "the new comer who does it differently then them". What is there to do differently? Either you have command of the English language and can make yourself understood and look professional or you do not. It's that simple. People who say that grammar and syntax does not matter are wrong. It is the basis for understanding. And besides, I just caught an error in Lance-the "non-paying" writer's article. Look at the quote above. It should be than, not then. Additionally, the semi-colon at the end of that particular paragraph--paragraph four-- in his article is also wrong and should be a dash or a colon. See what I mean? Now how can I take him seriously? I can't.

the idea that tomoview provides a valuable service is funnier than anything tomoview has ever done (except perhaps registering tomoview.net). it's a bunch
of cliquey booger-flicking by people who desperately need to distinguish themselves in any way possible, even with silly monikers and avatars in place of true

I disagree with you Shanari regarding grammar. I read one of William Gibson's early works (sorry it was a long time ago and I've forgot which book)
and all he used were full stops and commas to punctuate it. Besides, punctuation and grammar, historically, have been used to suppress creativity... especialy
within education institutions. Should someone who is dyslexic have his work scorned because of grammar or spelling... I think not.
This is the 21st century and language is changing... communication has developed... ever sent a text message? Did you understand it? I wager you did. Regards, AD |

The main reason for knowing the rules before breaking them is the need for obtaining consistency in the writing. The standardization of punctuation and
spelling is actually comparatively recent, and arrives with the advent of the first dictionaries. The need for it was to provide clarity in communication.
Clarity is a skill that is often ignored by non-professional authors. But without it, the stories will only leave the readers disgruntled and dissatisfied.
Education is moving more toward increasing a student's grasp of writing and communication. I dislike text speak. My daughter uses it sometimes and I
want to swat her, even though she's now in her early 20s.
