The causes behind autism are still unknown, but MAY be a combo of genetics, environment, diet and other factors. Still, nobody knows for sure. Genetics seems to be one of the right trees to be barking up though some neuroscientists speculate that it could be a developmental problem in the brain during gestation. The overall picture is that these pro infectious disease who think they are supporting autism and autism research are actually detrimental to it. It was a weakened live virus vaccine that was supposed to trigger an appropriate anti-body response from the child's immune system. My immune system had a lot of flaws in it and instead of developing an immunity I became one of a small number of cases who came down with polio from it. I was diagnosed with it on the basis of the results of a spinal tap. The current polio vaccine is extremely safe; far safer than the one I was given. I have read about the autism link and I am a firm believer that it is bullshit. The improvements in vaccines over the years have been impressive. Nevertheless when Sovay was given her first polio vaccine as a baby, my stomach clenched up and I had to keep telling myself that it was okay. Nothing bad happened to Sovay. There are no vampires, werewolves, and zombies in the real world. But it is OK to read and write stories about them, just as long as you know it is make believe. However, having the credulity to think vaccines cause autism despite the lack of any scientific evidence is believing too much too easily. Herd immunity allows a portion of the population to go unvaccinated, so the wackos who don't want their kids vaccinated don't have to, but if too many turn to the wacko side, then preventable diseases can be spread. Come on, you can allow a few Jenny McCarthy's of the world with their "mommy sense" overriding medical knowledge, but there rest of the rational population should just ignore her and her like minded wackos.
