For my own personal reasons, too, I've meant to ask this for quite some time. I'm just curious, at the end of the day, for most of you here, what
does it really come down to?
Do you write for the immortality or for the money, or a little bit of both?

Exactly as Ross said. I write to get the stories out of my head. If someone wants to pay me for them all the better..Currently, I'm managing on my writing
earnings and having a year (maybe more if all goes well) out of teaching. It's nice to just have the stories to think about.
I haven't sold out (before I hear the cries of corporate shilling!). I've just done the biggest deal of my career on an outline of a trilogy that I've been mulling over for quite some time and isn't 'tailored' to sell - its just the 'what if' that my head came up with. When I've written it, I'm sure the editing process from the company involved will go a long way to making the books better. I would still write even if my stories weren't sold/bought. I can't imagine not writing. Money is secondary (but very important if you're a career writer!!). Immortality I don't even think about. |

Immortality's an even longer shot than hoping to make money out of writing horror. More likely all the stories we write in our beloved genre will be banned
one day under some future religious theocracy, then we'll not only not get any form of immortality but be damned.

Most writers I know need to write - it's not so much a choice of doing it for fame or money as it is a deep desire
and need to express oneself through the medium of writing. I'd say that the desire to be a part of, and contribute to, a field that one loves is another
big factor.

Money and immortality are just a load of old bollocks compared to the benefits of personal and artistic fulfilment. I write to get the demons out of my head, to try and make sense of a senseless world, to attempt to codify the absolute madness I see before me every fucking day of my life. Saying all that, getting paid for all this is fucking great. :-) But haven't we been through all this about a million before? |

Immortality.
Money comes and goes, but aside from the need to create, the thought of someone, some far off day, finding my work on some dusty shelf; yeah, I have to be honest and say it will be a good thing if it happens.
